Once at the hotel, Rick made his way to the front desk and was greeted by the hotel clerk.

“How may I help you?”

“Oh good, you speak English.”

“Yessir. Are you checking in?”

“Yeah, I should have a room under the name Rick Waters.”

The man typed on his computer keyboard, then handed Rick two keys and an envelope with the Wi-Fi passcode on it.

“You’re in room 212 upstairs. Your room comes with a minibar refrigerator, shower, and a king bed. If you need anything, don’t hesitate to call. My name is Francisco. Oh, and there’s a free breakfast in the morning until ten.”

“Well, thank you, Francisco. We’ll probably be checking out tomorrow, but if we need to stay another night or so, will that be a problem?” asked Rick.

“No, it’s very slow right now, I have plenty of rooms available. Just me know before eleven and I can keep you and your friends all in the same rooms, just rescan the keys.”

“Sounds good, my man. Have a great day.”

“Thank you.” The man nodded to Jules and said, “Obrigado,” apparently assuming she was Brazilian. She just nodded back and smiled.

Rick opened the door of their room for Jules, and she set her backpack down on the edge of the bed, unzipped it, and pulled out a hairbrush with a heavy sigh.

“Boy, do I need a shower,” said Jules. “And I’ve been wearing the same clothes for days. Rick, I need something fresh.”

Rick unzipped his backpack and pulled out his MacBook. Once logged on, he did a Google search for nearby department stores. Los Americanos popped up and was only a few miles away.

“Okay, Jules. Let’s go shopping.”

Jules brushed her hair and did a quick washdown in the bathroom sink, then put her hair in a ponytail. She walked back to the bed and put her brush back inside. Rick noticed the edge of a large book in her backpack.

“Whatcha reading, Jules?”

“Oh, I’m not really reading it. Evan and the guys were studying it before they locked us in the hangar. He accidentally left it sitting on the wheel of the Cessna, so I swiped it, hoping you could use it. It’s a treasure book. Here, take a look.”

Jules handed Rick the book titled, Orinoco, The Jewel of God.

“They had this book with them?”

“Yeah, I overheard Evan saying that the map used to be folded inside the book. I think he was talking about the map I got from the dying man. The same map you used to find the jewel.”

Rick opened the book and shook it with the pages facing the floor. A small piece of paper slowly drifted to the floor. He bent over and picked it up. It was a receipt and badly faded, so he walked into the bathroom, the brightest place in the room, and pulled out a pair of readers and his LED flashlight. As he read the receipt, his knees got weak and he almost went down. Jules rushed over and grabbed Rick’s arm to steady him.
